Sicily Shocker: Massive Underwater Volcano Discovered
Just off the shores of Sicily, Italian scientists have discovered a underwater volcano with a base larger than Washington, DC. The volcanic structure incorporates peaks which were previously thought to be separate volcanoes. This large volcano structure is named Empedocles after the Greek philosopher who named the four classic elements of earth, air, fire and water. Legend has it that Empedocles died by throwing himself into Mount Etna, the nearby Sicilian volcano.
Empedocles is thought to have been at least 1,300 feet high - taller than the Eiffel Tower. The base of the structure was 18.6 miles long. It is now Italy's largest underwater volcano. But don't worry, Sicilians. According to the scientists who made this discovery, there's no imminent danger of an eruption occurring. (Read the full article)
