Last Katrina Shelter in Texas Closes
The last of almost 115,000 hurricane evacuees who fled to Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina packed up their belongings Thursday, as the state's final government-run shelter closed its doors. The shelter was built on a former Air Force base in San Antonio. Some headed back to New Orleans, hoping to rebuild their lives. Others moved into government-funded hotel rooms, hoping to make San Antonio their new home. As of Thursday, about 300 people remained in shelters nationwide, down from a peak of 270,000. An additional 38,000 families were living in hotels, down from the peak of 85,000. Their move-out deadline in February 7. (source)
