High School Shooting Kills One

A student shot and killed an assistant principal and seriously wounded two other administrators Tuesday at Campbell County High School, located in Jacksboro, Tennessee. One of the wounded was shot while trying to take the student into custody. The student was arrested, but no motive was known. "We don't know yet," said Campbell County Sheriff Ron McClellan. "These men are all fine Christian men, and I am at a loss for words." No students were injured. The school was locked down after the shooting. Governor Bredesen issued a statement, letting the victims know that "the prayers of every Tennessean are with you this afternoon."

UPDATE 11:25 pm: The suspect is identified as Kenny Bartley (pictured to the left), 15. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in LaFollette with an injury to his hand. After being treated, he was taken to a juvenile detention center in Scott County. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday. The boy is the son of a businessman who's place was raided recently for running a video poker operation under the label of an arcade. Students and teachers describe the boy as "troubled", and until recently attended an alternative school. So far, police do not have a motive for the killing. The freshman used a .22-caliber handgun in his attacks.

Campbell County High will remain closed for the rest of the week. Counselors will be avaliable at LaFollette and Jacksboro middle schools from 10 am to 2 pm for any of the schools' 1,400 students who needs help.

Assistant Principal Ken Bruce, pictured on the left, was the one who was murdered. Principal Gary Seale and Assistant Principle Jim Peace were wounded. The shootings happened between 2 and 2:30 pm EST. Dozens turned out at night at two seperate vigils, in honor of Ken Bruce. He had served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the army, and then went into teaching for about 8 years.

There was a time when this would've been the story of the day, now it's just sort of a ho-hum, oh some kid killed his classmates sort of deal. Hopefully the wounded recover and the killer both repents and is given appropriate justice.

Erika,
I just added an update. It's a very, very sad case. I'll try to remember to do update every now and then.

I'm starting to add "Story Tracker's" to the news stories. They give links to different REGIONAL news sites. I've realized that for some stories, a international wire copy doesn't quite cut it... You need the local perspective that only the locals can provide.

Wednesday and Thursday, I really can't update much at all. But you can use those links to get updates on the story, straight from the heartland.

I personally recommend WATE, myself.
