Big Rock Found

Buried 7 feet under the ground in Greensburg, Kansas was the holy grail of space rock hunters everywhere. A rare 1,400 pound meteorite was found after Steve Arnold of Kingston, Ark., used a metal detector while driving around on a three-wheeled vehicle. The meteorite is classified as an oriented pallasite, a type noted for a conical shape, with crystals embedded in iron-nickel alloy.

This is the third largest meteorite found on record. A 1,500-pound rock was found in Argentina, and a 3,100-pounder in Australia. The new meteorite was found in the same area where, in 1949, a 1,000-pound meteorite was found.
