World News Tonight

ABC has announced the replacements for Peter Jennings for their signature newscast, World News Tonight: Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargas. Both have been regular substitute anchors in the past months, along with Charlie Gibson, who didn't a spot in the job due to, well, there are varying accounts, so we'll just say "contract negotiations".

They'll start the day with a webcast at 3:30 pm ET, then followed by the live feed at 6:30 for the Eastern/Central time zones. Then they'll do another live broadcast at 8:30 pm for Mountain/Pacific time zones, and a final feed at 9:30 pm ET. Meaning? For the first time, viewers in large markets in LA and San Francisco will actually get a live evening newscast from a major broadcast network.

In addition to the webcast, parts of World News Tonight will be available for watching online. Reports from correspondents and anchors will be available throughout the day, even before the broadcast. The website will also serve as a "DVD"-like service, airing un-aired portions of interviews and extended versions of reports. "The Blue Sheet", the WNT blog, will be revamped to better fit the new team.

Vargas will also continue to co-anchor 20/20. Woodruff is expected to not to continue anchoring the weekend edition of WNT. Since at least one of the anchors will be in the studio, one or the other will start reporting from on-location more. Click here to read ABC's press release.
