The Quarter-Ton+ Pie
It's all but official... If Guiness agrees when it finishes inspecting, the Holland, Michigan pumpkin pie will be the world's largest pumpkin pie. The pan it was baked in was 6-feet wide. The finished pie weighed in at 678 pounds. The eight bakers also used 50 pounds of flour, 90 pounds of brown sugar, 26 pounds of shortening, 660 eggs, 660 cups of evaporated milk and 41 cups of maple syrup. The pie was made by a crew from the Alpen Rose restuarant, and was baked for about 6-8 hours at the Russ' Commisary in Holland. The commisary supplies Russ' Restaurants, which I wholy endorse (and not just because I'm on their payroll).
The record-breaking pie was unveiled to patrons of Resthaven Patrons, a senior citizens home celebrating its 60th anniversary. The bakers had to make the pie just like the real thing in order for it to count. And it had to look like a real pie, which it did. The previous record holder was a group in California, whose pie weighed in at 418 pounds. After it was baked, a big old wallop of whipped topping was put on top, and then the pie was sliced up so the public could dig in.
