Mynamar's military government has extended the house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, a pro-democracy leader who has spent 10 of the last 16 years in captivity. The length of the extension is not officialy known, though it is thought to be a year. The United States condemned the announcement, saying Myanmar should allow democracy and release Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.

Suu Kyi was most recently taken into custody on May 30, 2003, after her motercade was attacked by a pro-junta mob. For weeks, there were protests, expressing outrage at her detention. Suu Kyi's only company is a cook and the cook's daughter, and on rare occasions, personal doctors. TDI hopes that enough nations and powerful bodies keep putting pressure on Myanmar, and maybe, just maybe, get those political prisoners freed. (source)
