Delta NewsWire, 11/6/05

Welcome to The Delta NewsWire, the premiere NewsWire on the web to date! The Delta NewsWire is slightly different than the other wires, like International Update or Fifteen Minutes. We spend a few paragraphs in hard news, then maybe do a political story, maybe a business story, then some entertainment stories. So it's kind of like a perfect blend of all the other NewsWires that we still love and eagerly anticipate every week. On Sunday, November 6, 2005, a deadly tornado ripped through America's heartland, while France's heartland continues to be set ablaze by Muslim rioters. From across the web to your fingertips, this is the Delta Institute, bringing you the latest news and information NOW.

At least 20 people are dead and about 200 are injured after a tornado tore through parts of Indiana and Kentucky in the middle of the night. Henderson County, Kentucky, and the southern Indiana counties of Vanderburgh and Warrick were hit around 1:30, 2 a.m. ET. Among those dead were a teenage girl and a small child who were taking shelter with their family in their home. About 200 emergancy workers were called to the Eastbook trailer park, which is described as "devestated". The National Guard is being mobolized to help. At least 100 homes were destroyed, and an additional 125 were damaged. Residents are telling the media that they had very little warning before the tornado tore through town. Others probably slept through the warning sirens. Over at Ellis Park, several people were injured, grantstands ruined, and some horses were killed. Witnesses said the tornado touched down first near Henderson, and then hopped across the Ohio River into Indiana. This was the deadliest tornado to hit Indiana since 1974.

The Muslim riots continue in France, but this time, they got as far as Paris. French President Jacques Chirac spoke out for the first time today, promising arrest and punishment for those sowing "violence or fear" across France. Nearly 1,300 vehicles have been torched by the rioters, who have also destroyed businesses, schools, police stations, and post offices. In central Paris, gasoline bombs damages three cars near Place de la Republique. The rioters, predominately Muslim youth, are starting to use text messaging to organize attacks. Police have so far made 349 arrest nationwide, relating to the riots. Police also found a gasoline bomb-making factory in Evry, with more than 100 bottles ready to be turned into bombs, and another 50 already prepared. The rioting started October 27 after 2 teenagers of N. African descent were accidentally electrocuted as they hid in a power substation, apparently believing police were chasing them. Anger was then fanned anew days ago when a tear gas bomb exploded in a mosque in Clichy-sous-Bois — the northern suburb where the youths died.

A Jewish Defense League (JDL) activist imprisoned for his role in a plot to bomb a California mosque and the office of a Lebanese-American congressman was killed in a federal prison in Phoenix, the FDI reported on Saturday. Earl Krugel, 62, was killed in an assult, according to the Bureau, who wouldn't give further details, except to say that a homicide investigation had been opened. Krugel's wife said that FBI investigators told her an inmate had struck her convicted husband on the head from behind with a cement block. "Earl never saw it happening," she said. He had been at the medium-security prison for three days. He was arrested in 2001 and pleaded guilty in 2003 to one count of conspiracy to violate the civil rights of worshippers at the mosque and one count of carrying an explosive device in connection with a conspiracy to impede or injure an office of the United States. He was sentanced to 20 years.

Are Ah-nuld's biggest political critisc fellow actors? Warren Beatty (Dick Tracy) and wife Annette Bening (American Beauty) tried to crash a campaign appearance by the California governer, as Schwarzenegger tried to drum up last-minute support for a group of statewide ballot measures. The couple went up to the entrance of an airport hangar where several hundred Arnold supporters had gathered. A governor's aide told the stars that they were not on the guest lists, and they did not have the appropriate wristband to get inside. Beatty plans to shadow Schwarzenegger. He says he's not setting the ground for a gubernatorial race. "To me, this (Arnold's campaigning) is an abuse of the initiative process." He has a bus draped with a banner reading "Truth Squad", and is urging people to vote against the measures. TDI is not urging that, nor endorsing the measures. We think Californian should look at the measures themselves, and make up their own individual minds.

Get it while you can... Coca-Cola announced that it would begin phasing out Vanilla Coke, Vanilla Diet Coke and Diet Coke w/Lemon in the United States by the end of this year. They previously announced that it would phase Vanilla Coke out of the United Kingdom. The beverage giant announced that it plans to introduce Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (and a Diet counterpart) in January 2006. Regular Vanilla Coke may return sometime in the future. V.Coke sales slipped to 35 million unit cases in 2004, from 90 million in 2002. On a editorial note, the TDI Director has had Vanilla Coke before, and enjoys it very much so. But he only had it occasionally, and couldn't seriously see drinking it all of the time. But he swares that it is good, though.

Thousands of muggles waited in the rain Sunday in London's Leicester Square to greet cast members of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as they attended the film's premiere. The film is the darkest in the series, and it recieved a PG12 rating in the UK, and a PG-13 rating in the US. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon, and Maggie Smith were among the actors who attended the event. Radcliffe, 16, said that it is thrilling to meet his fans. "If this doesn't get you excited, then nothing will." The film opens in the United Kingdom and the United States on November 18.

Finally, on a lighter note, most people know that every coin has two sides. One one side, you have the Earlsboro, Olkahoma Wildcats, who won a recent High School basketball match with 112 points. On the flip side, you have Hanna High School, who lost with 2 points. There's no typo there... It was 112-2. So if you think your team did bad, you just have to look to Hanna High. Unless, of course, your team is Hanna High. For the Delta Institute, I'm Charles Jurries. I'll be back later with regular updates. Thanks for reading this NewsWire, and have a great day!
