World News

- US Marines and Afghan forces killed more than 40 terrorist over the course of a week in the eastern Koregnal Valley in Afghanistan, near Kabul. They believe this group of terrorist was reponsible for the attacks that killed 19 troops in June. Seperately, in Zabul, a 3-day battle left 65 suspected militants dead. 4 US soldiers were killed Sunday after terrorist blew up a bridge as a convoy was crossing. 3 troops were sounded from shrapnel. - Greece officials say that the Cypriot airliner that slammed into a mountian this month, killing all 121 people on board, lost cabin pressure and ran out of fuel. The preliminary report says that both pilot's were probably incapacitated, and that another man - possibly a flight attendant - tried to steer the plane. He also sent out a distress call twice within the last 10 minutes of the flight, but the communications may have been on the wrong frequency. Ultimately, officials think that it was a problem with an exhausted fuel supply. (source)

- The last Jewish settlement in Gaza was evacuated today. 4 other settlements in the West Bank will also be cleared out, but other spots in the West Bank will be expanded. It'll take a few weeks to completely clean up Gaza, so until then, Israel isn't letting any Palestinians in. (source)

- Iraq's parliament may or may not be getting a draft resolution today, depending on who you ask. (source)

- Exports have resumed from Basra on a limited basis at Iraq's only functioning oil terminal after power was cut for about a day after an attack on a major electric feeder line. (source)


National News

- 4 people are dead after a chain-reaction crash on the Indiana Toll Road. It happened late Sunday afternoon, when a semitrailer couldn't slow down in time and rear-ended a car. In all, 5 cars and the semi were involved. The truck driver is charged with 4 counts of reckless homicide. (source)

- The US Coast Guard searched the Florida Straits after three Cubans rescued at sea by a merchant ship say they had been aboard a boat that sank with 31 others onboard. They found a capsized boat, but it's not clear if it's the same boat or not. No bodies were immediately found.

- John Allen Muhammad, one of the convicted "Beltway Snipers" that terrorized the DC area in fall 2002, will begin his second murder trial. Both Muhammad and co-sniper Lee Boyd Malvo are being held in a maximum-security section of the Montgomery Correctional Facility, waiting for a trial that will try them in all six Maryland deaths at once. Prosecutors say the trials are insurance in case their Virginia convictions are overtuned. (source)

- The feds have indicted 87 Asian nationals on charges of smuggling counterfeit money, drugs, and cigarettes into the United States. This the result of an undercover investigation that led to seizing cargo containers at LA and Newark ports. $3.3 million in counterfeit US currency was seized. (source)

- Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) says that Iraq is looking like Vietnam. Except without swamps, mud, and green plants. And without the desert heat. And without Jane Honda, but we have Michael Moore, so it's close enough. (source)

- Now, we all said that if Dennis Kucinich were a married man, he would of stood a MUCH better change in the Democratic primaries. In fact, he would have won and been elected President, if he had a wife. Well, watch out next time around, 'cause he married Elizabeth Harper on Sunday. It's the 3rd marriage for the twice-divorced Kucinich, 58. The bride is a British citizen who works for a think tank in Chicago. Congratulations, Dennis, on your marriage. (source)

Grand Rapids, MI News

- There was another shooting at the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids. This one happened just after 1 am Sunday morning. A dispute in the parking lot led to the shooting. The victim was taken to the hopsital.

- A fire destroyed a 30 x 50 foot metal pole barn at Huizenga Farms on 96th Ave. on Sunday. 55 sows and 300 piglets died from smoke inhalation. About 50 firefighters from three departments battled the blaze. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. (source)

- Saturday, the West Michigan Community Bank in Grandville was robbed after the suspected robber held up a gun and made a bomb threat. It happened just after 8:30 Saturday morning. The suspect is described as a white male between 55 and 60, 5"7, weighing about 200 pounds. He has grey hair, blue eyes, and was wearing a cream color wind suit and baseball cap with USA embroidered on it. If you have any information, please call the Grandville Police Department.

- A GR bicyclist was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a car while riding his bike on Eastern Avenue near Walsh Street SE. The biker went to the middle lane to avoid a turning vehicle, at the same time a car went to the middle lane for the same reason. He's being treated for skull fractures. He was not riding his helmet.

Tuesday's Forecast for Grand Rapids

WXMI FOX 17: Fair skies returning and continuing through Thursday. High's in the low to mid 70's. Nighttime lows could dip to around 50, with some outlying areas getting down into the 40's. Mid 80's by next weekend, though.

WZZM ABC 13: Partly cloudy skies and milder temperatures in the low to mid 70's, with N-NE winds at 5-10 mph. More sunshine on Wednesday. The 6-10 day outlook for August 27-31 calls for warmer than average temperatures and rainfall.

WOOD NBC 8: High's in the low to mid 70's, with party cloudy skies.
