The Day of Shudders

File Under: Terrorism Coverage
2 weeks after the deadly 7/7 bombings, London was once again reminded of the very real threat of everyday terrorist, ready to strike in their society. Here's a quick rundown of the key events that took place today:

- Only one person was injured, with no one reported killed.
- 3 explosions occured on Subway trains. A 4th explosion took place on a bus in east London.
- None of the bombs presumably detonated properly.
- Officials are hoping to glean a bunch of forensic information from the bombs.
- "Clearly, the intention must have been to kill," said Sir Ian Blair at a press conference. "You don't do this with any other intention, and I think that the important point is that the intention of the terrorist has not been fulfilled."
- Police are currently searching for 4 bombers, believed to be at large.
- All 4 bombs were in rucksacks, and were found at the sites of the explosions.
- Police recieved reports of people running away from two of the attempted blast sites.
- 2 people have been arrested in connection with the blasts.
- 3 of the 4 bombs are of similar size and weight to the bombs used in the 7/7 attacks. The 4th was smaller and was probably contained in a small plastic box.
- The devices appear similar to devices found in a bath at a property in West Yorkshire.
- Random searches of bags, purses, and backpacks will begin in New York City subways.
- All 4 sites are currently sealed off to anybody.
- Officials worry that it may have been a "copycat" crime. However, the possibility that it was the same group as before is not ruled out.
- Terrorist often target mass transit. In Israel, terrorist groups often strike buses. On 9/11, commercial airliners were hijacked. In the Madrid attacks, 10 bombs exploded on 4 communter trains, killing 191 people.
- The blast were not simultaneous. They were spread out throughout the lunch hour, starting at 12:38 pm, London time.
- And this man saw one of the attempted suicide bombers, face-to-face.
