A Late Funeral
The following is summarized from a AP article:
For many families, it was a couple months after September 11, 2001 before they could hold a funeral for their loved ones. For one family, it wouldn't be until June 11, 2004 until they would hold a formal funeral for their deceased hero.
30-year old Keithroy M. Maynard was one of 343 firefighters who were killed while rushing to help others following the World Trade Center attacks. His family held a memorial service two months after the attacks, but waited to hold a formal funeral until enough of his remains had been identified by foresnics experts.
Hundreds of uniformed firefighters stood in line as a engine draped in black and purple carried Maynard's remains to the Church of the Master. A pipe and drum corps played "Amazing Grace." This was the first ceremony for a firefighter killed at the World Trade Center since 2003.
Maynard, a naturalized U.S. citizen, will be buried in Montserrat, a Caribbean island he lived on until he was 15. He had been a firefighter for two years. His late father, was a firefighter. Keithroy's twin brother, Kevin, became a firefighter following his death. Another brother is a New York police officer.
Maynard had been a firefighter for two years. His late father, Reynold White, was a New York City fire captain. His twin brother, Kevin Maynard, became a firefighter in Houston after his brother's death. Another brother, Duane White, is a New York police officer. He is also survived by his mother, and a son, Keithroy Maynard II. He was six when his father died in the terrorist attacks.
